Nalgene Water Fund Heads to Appalachia

The Nalgene Water Fund Donates $50,000 to DigDeep; Launches Limited Edition Bottle to Promote Lasting Clean Water Access

ROCHESTER, NY – MAY 21, 2025 – In celebration of its five-year commitment to helping address the U.S. water crisis, the Nalgene Water Fund (NWF), established by Nalgene Outdoor, the makers of the iconic wide-mouth reusable bottle, today announced a $50,000 donation to DigDeep’s Appalachia Water Project (AWP). The contribution brings Nalgene’s mission to a region long sought out by its enthusiasts for its epic outdoor adventures and awe-inspiring landscapes, yet many communities there still lack access to clean, reliable water and basic sanitation.

To express appreciation for Appalachia’s beauty and engage its fans in supporting the region’s pressing water crisis, Nalgene Outdoor is launching a limited-edition bottle inspired by Appalachia’s iconic blue ridgelines and rivers. Available May 21 exclusively at Nalgene.com, each $20 bottle contributes $5 to the Nalgene Water Fund in support of DigDeep’s community-led work to deliver long-term water solutions.

“Being chosen as the beneficiary of a Nalgene Water Fund bottle brings critical support and helps us reach new people who care about this crisis,” said Travis Foreman, Director of DigDeep’s Appalachia Water Project. “Creating sustainable water access takes long-term commitment and trusted support, and this collaboration brings both.”

Five Years of Action: Fueling Clean Water Progress Through Partnership

Since 2019, the Nalgene Water Fund has provided more than $800,000 in funding and in-kind support to grassroots partners advancing clean water access across the country. The crisis remains urgent, with over 2.2 million people in the U.S. still living without access to running water or basic plumbing.

Nalgene’s impact has grown through collaborations like REVERB’s RockNRefill program. For the first time, proceeds from bottles donated by Nalgene Outdoor and sold at live music events will go to the Nalgene Water Fund, turning fan purchases into meaningful support for clean water projects nationwide.

Communities supported by the fund include:

  • Flint, MI: With Thermo Fisher Scientific, helped launch the Flint Community Water Lab with $650,000 in equipment, funding, and bottles.
  • Benton Harbor, MI: Donated $13,000 and 2,000 bottles to install lead-filtering refill stations in district schools.
  • Navajo Nation: Raised nearly $80,000 with Diné designer Jaden Redhair to support DigDeep’s Navajo Water Project and COPE.
  • Western North Carolina: Donated $10,000 and 2,000 bottles to Water Mission following Hurricane Helene.

“We designed this bottle to turn our appreciation for Appalachia into action,” said Eric Hansen, Marketing Director at Nalgene Outdoor. “We hope Nalgene fans will rally behind DigDeep’s mission and give back to a region that’s given them so many unforgettable adventures.”

How to Help Refill the Good

Nalgene Water Fund Donates $10,000 and Reusable Bottles to Help Restore Safe Water Access After Hurricane Helene

At Nalgene Outdoor, we believe in the power of clean water and the positive impact it has on communities. That’s why in the wake of Hurricane Helene, we felt compelled to donate $10,000 from The Nalgene Water Fund and 2,000 wide-mouth reusable bottles to Water Mission, an engineering nonprofit that builds safe water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions in disaster areas. Our donation will help support Water Mission restore access to safe water for the victims of Hurricane Helene, which struck the southeastern United States on September 26, unleashing its devastating Category 4 fury on North Carolina.

The storm caused severe flooding, claimed more than 150 lives, and inflicted up to $35 billion in estimated damage. Millions were left without power or safe drinking water, creating an urgent need for immediate assistance.

Water Mission responded quickly deploying its disaster response team to the hardest-hit areas, starting in Boone, North Carolina. Currently, they have 15 water treatment systems either operational or in the setup process, producing over 180,000 gallons of safe water. Each system can provide clean water to up to 5,000 people daily. Additionally, they have distributed 124,000 water purification packets and more than 1,000 generators to support the affected communities.

Eric Hansen, Director of Marketing for Nalgene Outdoor, shared his thoughts on this important work: “Supporting Water Mission’s efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene is a natural extension of our work with The Nalgene Water Fund. In times of crisis, it’s essential to respond and help those in need. We were truly impressed by Water Mission’s innovative water filtration systems and their ability to quickly provide safe drinking water from rivers and other water sources, minimizing the dependency on single-use bottles and addressing the recycling challenges they create in disaster zones.”

The donation of 2,000 Nalgene bottles not only offers a practical solution for hydration but also promotes sustainability. Each of our bottles is designed for durability and reusability, reducing the reliance on single-use plastics. We hope these bottles come to symbolize the importance of clean water and environmental responsibility.

The $10,000 donation will go towards Water Mission’s ongoing efforts to restore safe water access to communities in Boone, North Carolina and elsewhere in the state so they can continue to rebuild their lives. Every dollar counts, and we’re grateful to be part of this initiative that prioritizes health and safety.

As we move forward, we encourage everyone to join us in supporting organizations like Water Mission. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by natural disasters and promote a future where clean water is accessible to all.

Stay connected with us for updates on The Nalgene Water Fund’s ongoing initiatives and how you can get involved. Together, we can build towards a healthier, more sustainable future!

This donation is made with the intent to support communities in need of access to clean water. The donor is not affiliated with, nor does this contribution support, any religious organization or faith-based initiative.

Help domestic communities access clean water today with the purchase of an exclusive Nalgene Water Fund bottle.

$5 of every purchase of a Nalgene Water Fund bottle goes directly to nonprofits to ensure all American communities have access to clean water.

NALGENE OUTDOOR HITS THE ROAD WITH ENVIRONMENTAL NONPROFIT, REVERB

As the live music scene gears up for an electrifying summer season, Nalgene Outdoor, creators of the iconic reusable water bottle, is hitting the road for a tenth year of #RockNRefill, a campaign established in 2013 with nonprofit REVERB to reduce single-use plastics at live music events. Nalgene Outdoor has donated more than 500,000 bottles over the past decade, helping REVERB transform the way music fans hydrate at shows by avoiding single-use plastic water bottles, pushing for policy changes at venues to allow reusable bottles on site and normalizing the daily “refill and reuse” habit beyond the home. #RockNRefill will be a part of some of the hottest tours in 2024 including Billie Eilish, Guster, Dead & Company’s residency at the Sphere, and more, helping to reduce waste and raise funds to support social and environmental causes.

“As a touring musician for over 30 years, I saw first-hand how single-use plastic was hard to avoid on the road – it was just seen as almost inevitable. The partnership between REVERB and Nalgene has helped bring reusables into the mainstream for artists and fans and others in the music industry including venue operators to cut down on waste,” says Adam Gardner, Guster guitarist /vocalist and Co-Founder, Co-Executive Director of REVERB.

10 Years of Nalgene Outdoor + REVERB

● Nalgene Outdoor has donated more than 500,000 bottles to REVERB helping to divert more than 5 million single-use bottles from landfills and raise more than $4M to support social and environmental nonprofit causes.
● For 2024, Nalgene Outdoor will donate an additional 75,000 limited edition reusable bottles to REVERB to support sustainability efforts on tour and at concerts with Billie Eilish, Guster, Dead & Co., and other headliners.

Since its inception a decade ago, #RockNRefill has effectively avoided the use of more than 5 million single-use plastic bottles at live music events.  And the benefits don’t end there!  Nalgene Outdoor donates bottles with limited-edition, artist-centric graphics. Those bottles are available for sale to fans at REVERB’s Action Villages on tours with 100 percent of the sales benefiting REVERB and other nonprofit organizations dedicated to social and environmental causes. Concert-goers can fill up for free at #RockNRefill water stations throughout the show, and then bring home a Nalgene bottle to use over and over. To date, this model has raised more than $4 million dollars and counting benefiting hundreds of nonprofit organizations nationwide!

“We’re proud of the sustainability movement #RockNRefill has helped inspire at concerts. When we started this partnership it was rare for venues to allow reusable bottles on site,” says Eric Hansen, marketing director, Nalgene Outdoor. “This simple addition to how concerts are run has forever changed the fan experience, the artists’ goals, and venue operations for the better.”

Look for Limited-Edition, #RockNRefill Nalgene Bottles Out On Tour This Summer and Fall

This summer, Nalgene Outdoor will donate an additional 75,000 custom-designed bottles each commemorating a respective artist’s tour or live event. #RockNRefill bottles are available for sale exclusively at REVERB Action Villages on tour and at select venues in 2024. A partial list is below with more shows and artists to be added:

  •       Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour
  •       Dave Matthews Band Tour 2024
  •       Dead & Company: Dead Forever Live at The Sphere Las Vegas
  •       Guster Summer Tour 2024
  •       ODESZA: The Last Goodbye Finale
  •       Tyler Childers: Mule Pull ‘24 Tour

Nalgene Outdoor Celebrates 75 Years with Two Exclusive Designs

From Trailblazing to Trend Setting, the Nalgene Brand Known for Establishing Reusable Containers as Essential to Living More Sustainably Continues its Mission to Eliminate Single-Use Plastics

Get ready to raise your bottles high as Nalgene Outdoor, the “OG” of reusable water bottles since ‘49, hits the big 7-5!  Marking this milestone, Nalgene Outdoor is dropping not one, but two limited-edition, anniversary designs.  One pays homage to Nalgene Outdoor’s iconic “time-tested and adventure-approved” design, while the other reintroduces the brand’s very first logo of a prowling Mountain Lion, a blast from the past reminding you why Nalgene bottles have been your go-to through thick and thin.

The bottles honor decades of trailblazing firsts by Nalgene Outdoor inspired by its mission to eliminate the impact of single-use plastics. Part of the “Hydration Revolution,” Nalgene Outdoor was among the first to promote a “refill, not landfill” lifestyle. Later, with the emergence of new drinking and exercise habits, the brand created mainstream appeal for reusable bottles with the introduction of vivid colors and graphics, popularizing their use and raising awareness for the added benefits reusables bring to the environment.  Today, reusable bottles are a staple in every home.

“We’re not just celebrating 75 years; we’re celebrating a legacy of innovation and sustainability,”

says Eric Hansen, marketing director, Nalgene Outdoor.

“From our beginnings in the lab in the 40s to pioneering vivid colors and graphics in the 90s to manufacturing with recycled materials and championing social and environmental causes, Nalgene Outdoor has been setting trends and making a positive impact since day one,” adds Hansen.

Nalgene Outdoor’s anniversary commemorative, limited edition designs featured on its 32-ounce wide-mouth bottle will be available exclusively on Nalgene.com for $19.99.  20% of proceeds from each anniversary bottle purchased will go to support the Nalgene Water Fund. First established in 2019, the Nalgene Water Fund supports domestic communities struggling with access to clean water and has donated more than $400,000 in financial and in-kind donations to programs in Flint, MI, Navajo Nation, and Benton Harbor, MI.

Nalgene Sticker 75th Anniversary
A commemorative sticker is also available for Nalgene Outdoor fans to purchase for $5.00.

75 Years of Nalgene Outdoor: Pioneering Sustainability, Design, and Social Impact

For 75 years, Nalgene Outdoor has been blazing trails in sustainability and style. From its lab equipment origins in 1949 to becoming a cultural icon, the brand’s journey is one of simple, sustainable promises.

  • Led “Pack-in, Pack-Out” Movement: Nalgene Outdoor pioneered a leave-no-trace mentality, expanding its benefits from the trails to summer camps and campuses nationwide.
  • First to Appeal to the Masses by Introducing Vivid Colors & Graphics: In the ’90s, we brought color and graphics to reusable bottles just as workout trends took over the mainstream, making a Nalgene bottle a lifestyle must-have, not just your Dad’s camping gear.
  • Harnessed Cutting Edge Customization: With advanced technologies and cutting-edge photo printing capabilities, Nalgene’s Customizer shop on Nalgene.com designs one-of-a-kind bottles.
  • Doing Good with Sustainable Hydration Is Part of Who We Are: We’ve partnered with social and environmental initiatives like “Refill Not Landfill” and “Drink Up” with former First Lady Michelle Obama, replacing single-use plastic with sustainable hydration.
  • Transformed Live Music Events by Normalizing Refill Stations: In collaboration with environmental nonprofit REVERB, Nalgene Outdoor has diverted more than 5 million single-use plastic bottles at live music events from landfills, and generated over $4 million for social and environmental causes.
  • First to Convert to Recycled Materials Across Manufacturing: We were the first in the industry to adopt material derived from recycled plastic in the manufacturing of our bottles. As a result, Nalgene Outdoor will repurpose nearly 11 million pounds of recycled plastic by 2028 into reusable water bottles that minimize single-use plastic into the future.
  • We Care About the Water That Goes Into Our Bottles: We established the Nalgene Water Fund, to ensure all domestic communities have access to clean water, with over $400,000 donated to communities in crisis to date.

Today, Nalgene bottles remain proven and trusted companions for everyday adventures. Made in the USA from BPA/BPS-free materials derived from 50% plastic waste, Nalgene bottles are durable, lightweight, 100% leakproof and dishwasher safe. Still at a price point of $20 or less, Nalgene bottles buck the trend that premium gear must cost a premium price.

Nalgene Outdoor Named EF Go Ahead Tours’ Official Water Bottle for Sustainable Travel

To Significantly Reduce Single-Use Plastics, EF Go Ahead Tours Encourages a “Refill Over Landfill” Travel Mentality

In advance of the busy summer travel season when an estimated 82% of Americans are planning to travel, EF Go Ahead Tours, a leading provider of guided group tours, proudly names Nalgene Outdoor, the original manufacturer of reusable water bottles as its official sustainable water bottle provider. This reflects a shared commitment to environmental responsibility in reducing single-use plastics in all of life’s travel adventures, from the everyday to the once-in-a-lifetime.

As part of EF Go Ahead’s ever-increasing commitment to responsible travel, the tour operator will gift reusable Nalgene water bottles to travelers embarking on dozens of different itineraries to 25 countries, from Central America to Africa. The bottles are to equip and encourage travelers to adopt a more sustainable travel style opting to “refill over landfill” and reduce single-use plastic consumption. To ensure the ease of accessing clean water during travel, EF Go Ahead’s Tour Directors will help direct travelers to the best refill stations in every destination.

“By partnering with Nalgene Outdoor, a 75-year-old brand recognized for its travel and eco-friendly products, we aim to empower our travelers to help preserve the planet and reduce waste while exploring the world,"

says Heidi Durflinger, President of EF Go Ahead Tours.

“For us, traveling has always been about more than seeing places at their surface level. Making a positive impact is at the heart of every tour we offer. One way to bring this commitment to life is by educating our travelers on their choices and promoting sustainable practices,” adds Durflinger.

Nalgene Outdoor’s commitment to sustainability aligns seamlessly with EF Go Ahead Tours’ goal to promote responsible tourism. Founded on the mission to reduce the use of single-use plastics, Nalgene Outdoor was the first water bottle company to adopt recycled materials in its production. For every 32-oz Nalgene bottle, the equivalent of eight single-use bottles are rescued from a landfill, and repurposed into a new reusable bottle. Over the next five years, with its manufacturing, Nalgene Outdoor will divert the equivalent of 4.8 million single-use plastic bottles from landfills; that’s repurposing nearly 11 million pounds of plastic waste!

“Partnering with EF Go Ahead Tours to promote sustainable travel practices is a natural extension for Nalgene Outdoor,” says Eric Hansen, Marketing Director, Nalgene Outdoor. “Nearly 80% of plastic ever made sits in landfills.* By refilling a Nalgene bottle made from 50% recycled materials that has been rescued from landfills, in one week, travelers are taking small steps toward big impact. When you multiply this by the thousands of people who will travel this summer the total benefit to the world is huge!”

Notoriously durable, Nalgene bottles are known to stand up to the rigors of travel. From gliding seamlessly through airport security, easily stowed in a backpack side-compartment or tucked away in a purse, Nalgene bottles are the perfect lightweight hydration accessory for travel.

As part of the partnership, EF Go Ahead travelers will at select times have the opportunity to purchase additional Nalgene bottles at discount directly at www.Nalgene.com encouraging all to embrace sustainable practices not only while traveling, but for their whole family during everyday life.

Tips for Traveling Responsibly

At its core EF Go Ahead strives to open the world through education and responsible, sustainable business practices. Travel and purchase choices can leave a positive social, economic, and environmental footprint on the destinations and communities EF Go Ahead visits.  Heidi Durflinger suggests a few ways that travelers can join EF Go Ahead in attaining this goal, whether on tour across the globe or home in their everyday lives:

  • Travel with a reusable water bottle.
  • Pack your own toiletries and grooming products in reusable containers.
  • Take public transportation or walk whenever possible.

New Limited-Edition Psychedelic Bottles Offer a Fun and Functional Break from Everyday Reality

Nature-inspired, psychedelic art designs in sync with today’s hottest wellness and fashion trends

At nearly 75, Nalgene Outdoor is one of the only water bottle brands to have actually lived through the 60s … And great things come with having been there and done that!

Today, the “OG” of reusable water bottles is marrying its incredibly simple yet durable and iconic bottle design with a throwback to its youth. In line with popular trends that nod back to a “groovier” time including a resurgence of the underground wellness trend of micro-dosing and fashion trends straight from the runways that combine 70s nostalgia with futuristic flair,  we proudly debut the Psychedelic Botanicals Bottle Collection, a limited-edition trio of mind-bending, nature-inspired psychedelic art designs.

From dancing mushrooms to funky florals and groovy ferns, these new classic 32-oz wide mouth water bottles transcend time. Decked out with designs that are out of this world featuring distorted, abstract circles of swirling bright colors and playful animation, the bottles appear to have a trippy sense of movement and depth.

“While it’s true that Nalgene fans love to express themselves by decorating a blank Nalgene bottle with stickers, our brand also has a long-history of introducing super cool designs,” says Elissa McGee, general manager, Nalgene Outdoor. “The Psychedelic Botanicals Collection continues that legacy with a modern touch; tapping into the full spectrum of color, design techniques, and state-of-the-art printing technology.”

These new limited edition Psychedelic Botanicals Collection are available exclusively on Nalgene.com for just $17.99.

“A 32-oz Nalgene wide mouth bottle seems the perfect canvas to revive the 60s and 70s’ peace and love lifestyle,” adds McGee.

All Nalgene bottles are made in the USA from materials derived from  50% waste, BPS/BPA free content.  Incredibly durable and 100% leakproof, Nalgene water bottles are lightweight, built-to-last, come with a Lifetime Guarantee, and are dishwasher safe to keep you on the go!

Nalgene Water Fund Donates $10K to Dig Deep’s Navajo Water Project on Giving Tuesday

Latest donation closes in on more than $90,000 donated since 2020 to nonprofits promoting universal water access on the Navajo Nation

In recognition of Giving Tuesday and timed to coincide with November being National Native American Heritage Month, the  Nalgene Water Fund (NWF) is pleased to donate an additional $10,000 to DigDeep, a human rights organization working to ensure that every person in the United States has equitable access to clean, running water and safe sanitation forever. This donation supports DigDeep’s Navajo Water Project, helping to bring hot and cold running water to the 1 in 3 Navajo Nation residents who currently lack access to clean water and safe sanitation.

This recent donation is on top of more than $80,000 in donations that Nalgene Outdoor has raised from the sale of its limited-edition “Tó éí iiná” (Water is Life) limited-edition bottle series created by Diné designer Jaden Redhair. The first “Tó éí iiná” bottle design was introduced in 2020 and the current “Tó éí iiná” (Water is Life) Winter design featuring a coyote is Redhair’s second in the limited bottle series with Nalgene Outdoor. With every sale of a Tó éí iiná” (Water is Life) bottle,  $5 goes to  support local nonprofits addressing the water crisis on the Navajo Nation. To date, all of the generated funds have gone towards supporting DigDeep and the work of other nonprofits trying to achieve greater access to running water and sanitation on the Navajo Nation.

“I wanted to create something that speaks to people who don’t know about the Navajo Nation, so they learn to appreciate what makes our land and way of life so special. This version of the “Tó éí iiná” (Water is Life) design is a visual representation of one of the stories that we tell during winter before the last frost gives way to summer sometime in May,’” says Jaden Redhair, the Diné designer who created the limited edition series. “The design encompasses the sacred need for nature. We Navajos were the original caretakers of the land in what is now known as Arizona. Water is an essential source of understanding how the land works and how to sustainably live off it – to grow food, to nourish the circle of life. Nothing can exist without water. And still, so many Navajo live without access to running water today.  My hope is that my designs can change this for my people.”

According to DigDeep’s Navajo Water Project, 30% of Navajo families live without running water. Incredibly, they are 67 times more likely than other Americans to live without running water or a toilet.

“It’s difficult to imagine living without running water in your home, but for many on the Navajo Nation, their daily way of life includes going to great lengths to conserve water or traveling great distances to retrieve it for the well being of their family and livestock,”  says Elissa McGee, general manager for Nalgene Outdoor. “Access to clean, running water is a fundamental human right that Nalgene Outdoor upholds for all.  We’re so pleased to make this donation on behalf of The Nalgene Water Fund and to continue to raise money for the Navajo Nation through the sale of Jaden’s latest Tó éí iiná bottle design.”
